What is a skills gap analysis?

It’s a structured way to compare the requirements of a target role with your current capabilities. The goal is to find the smallest set of gaps that unlocks interviews and inside access—not to learn everything. Focus on demonstrable outcomes you can show in a portfolio within weeks.

Step-by-step template

  1. Pick a specific adjacent role and collect 5–10 real job posts.
  2. Extract repeated requirements; cluster into skills, tools, and outcomes.
  3. Score yourself 0–3 per item; attach evidence links where possible.
  4. Prioritize: pick 3 gaps that appear most often and map to outcomes.
  5. Design one portfolio project that proves 2–3 gaps in one shot.

  1. Ship a scoped project that solves a real problem for a real user.
  2. Add data and distribution: measure outcomes and share learnings.
